Interest Khata is a khata app and byaj calculator run by the Interest Khata team. This page explains what data we handle, why, where it is kept and the choices you have. Questions or complaints: contact@interestkhata.com.
If you use the app without signing in
Everything you enter stays on your phone. It is stored in an encrypted database whose key is kept in your phone’s secure keystore. Nothing is sent to us.
If you turn on backup
We keep the following so that your khata is backed up and works on your other phones:
- your mobile number, to sign you in with a one-time code sent by SMS;
- your khatas: business name, the names and mobile numbers of people you add, entries, notes, bill photos and interest settings;
- technical details needed to sync: a random device ID, and the times entries were made and received.
Bill photos
When you add a photo to an entry, the app opens the camera or Android’s photo picker and uses only the photo you take or choose. It is made smaller and kept inside the app, not in your gallery. With backup on, it is also kept in your private backup, which only you can open. Removing a photo from an entry deletes it from the phone and from the backup. Photos never appear on shared hisaab links.
Contacts
When you add a person from your contacts, the app shows the names and numbers saved on your phone so you can choose one. Once you have allowed contacts, the app reads this list on the phone when it opens, so the list shows without a wait, and keeps it in memory only while the app is open. It is not saved in the app, not uploaded and not used for anything else. Only the name and number of the contact you choose are added to your khata.
Shared hisaab links
When you share a link to someone’s hisaab, anyone with that link can see that one account: the names, entries and interest. It never shows phone numbers. You can stop a link at any time from the person’s page in the app.
The website calculator
Calculations run in your browser. We do not store what you enter.
We use Google Analytics to count visits: which pages are opened, from which kind of device and roughly where, and when a calculation is shared. It uses cookies on this website only. It receives the page’s address without the numbers you entered, never opens shared hisaab links, and is not used for ads. Google’s own policy applies to that data: https://policies.google.com/privacy. You can block it with your browser’s settings or an ad blocker; the calculators work the same.
Anonymous usage counts
The app counts which features are used (for example “entry added” or “hisaab shared”), with a random ID that is not linked to your mobile number. It never sends names, numbers, amounts or notes. The counts are processed by PostHog. You can turn this off in Settings.
What we never do
- We do not sell your data.
- We do not show ads.
- We do not lend money or share your khata with lenders.
Where your data is kept
Backups are stored on servers in Mumbai, India, run by our cloud provider (Supabase, on Amazon Web Services). Login codes are sent through an Indian SMS provider registered on the DLT platform. These providers process data only for us.
People in your khata
You add details of people you lend to or borrow from. Keep only what you need for your own record of money given and received. We use these details only to provide the service to you. Anyone whose details are in a khata may write to us at the address above.
How long we keep it
As long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your khatas and login are erased from our servers at once, and from our backups within 30 days.
Your rights
Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 you may ask to see, correct or erase your data, nominate someone to act for you, and complain to us and then to the Data Protection Board of India. Most of this you can do in the app; for anything else, email us.
Security
- Data on the phone is encrypted.
- Data travels to our servers over encrypted connections.
- Each account can reach only its own khatas.
- Entries can’t be changed or deleted once saved. An edit is saved as a new version, and each entry is chained to the one before it, so tampering would show.
Children
Interest Khata is meant for adults. Do not use it if you are under 18.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before it applies.
