What is 2% interest on ₹1 lakh: a month or a year?

It depends on what “2%” means. 2% a month (₹2 sekda) on ₹1,00,000 is ₹2,000 every month, or ₹24,000 in a year. 2% a year is ₹2,000 for the whole year, just ₹166.67 a month. Lenders in villages and markets usually mean a month; banks and textbooks mean a year. Ask, and write it down.

What is the formula to calculate interest?

Interest = Amount × Rate × Time ÷ 100. With a monthly rate (₹ sekda), count the time in months; with a yearly rate, in years. ₹50,000 at ₹1.5 sekda for 6 months: 50,000 × 1.5 × 6 ÷ 100 = ₹4,500, the same as 18% a year for half a year. See how to calculate byaj.

How do I calculate interest between two dates?

Count whole calendar months from the date the money was given, then count the leftover days as 1/30 of a month each. 10 Jan to 25 Apr is 3 months 15 days, or 3.5 months; ₹50,000 at ₹1.5 sekda for that time is ₹2,625. The byaj calculator does this for any two dates and shows each step.

How much is the interest on ₹1 lakh per month?

It depends on the rate: ₹1,00,000 ÷ 100 × the sekda. At ₹1 sekda (12% a year) it is ₹1,000; at ₹1.5 sekda (18%) ₹1,500; at ₹2 sekda (24%) ₹2,000, or ₹24,000 a year. For a yearly rate, divide it by 12 first. The rate converter shows the byaj a day, month and year.

How do I find the interest rate from the interest amount?

Divide the interest by the amount and by the number of months, then multiply by 100. That gives the monthly rate, or ₹ sekda. ₹3,000 interest on ₹50,000 over 3 months: 3,000 ÷ 50,000 ÷ 3 × 100 = ₹2 sekda, which is 24% a year. The byaj dar calculator also finds the principal or the time; for a loan repaid in EMIs, use the EMI calculator.

How is interest calculated on an EMI loan?

Each month, interest is charged only on the balance you still owe: balance × yearly rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100. The rest of the EMI repays the loan, so the interest falls month by month. ₹1,00,000 at 12% for 12 months: EMI ₹8,885, first month's interest ₹1,000, total interest ₹6,618. See the EMI formula.

What are the different types of interest?

Two basic types. Simple interest (sadharan byaj) is charged only on the principal. Compound interest (chakravriddhi byaj) adds unpaid interest to the principal at set times, so interest is then charged on interest too. On ₹1,00,000 at 12% for 5 years, simple interest is ₹60,000; compounded yearly it is ₹76,234. See simple vs compound interest.
